  4. ░  The MAIN MENU is the point of departure for all funct-    
  5. ░  ions of ALPHAQUOTE.  Enter the selection number for       
  6. ░  the desired function to use.                              
  7. ░            The functions and a brief descripton:           
  8. ░                                                            
  9. ░  Setup          Contains the hourly rates, penalty         
  10. ░                 factors, credit factors, and the data      
  11. ░                 necessary to print a report.               
  12. ░                                                            
  13. ░  Estimate/      The major function for pricing and         
  14. ░     Copyfit     pagination.                                
  15. ░                                                            
  16. ░  Print          Prints a formatted report to a line        
  17. █                 printer or disk file                       
  18. █                                                            
  19. ░  View Status    Displays a window that shows current       
  20. ░                 calculation with an optional summary.      
  21. ▒                                                            
  22. ▒  Reset Status   Initializes the STATUS display to zero     
  23. ░                                                            
  24. ░  Disk           Saves, retrieves or displays a directory   
  25. ░                 of the estimates.  Note: The setup rates   
  26. ░                 are saved and recalled with the estimate.  
  27. ░                                                            
  28. ░  Help           Help text files.  They may be accessed     
  29. ░                 anywhere in the program by pressing F1     
  30. ░                                                            
  31. ░  Calculator     A pop-up calculator featuring, addition,   
  32. ░                 subtraction, multiplication and division   
  33. ░                 as well as conversion of picas & points    
  34. █                 to inches and inches to picas & points.    
  35. █                                                            
  36. ░  Breakout       A pop-up window keeps track of all pages   
  37. ░                 while keeping a running total.             
  38. ░                                                            
  39. ░  Quit           Close the program and return to DOS        
  40. ░                                                            
  41. ▒                           STRATEGIES                       
  42. ▒                           ══════════                       
  43. ░     ALPHAQUOTE can be used to estimate many different      
  44. ░     types of publications such as magazines, newspapers,   
  45. ░     newsletters and books.  There are two basic estimat-   
  46. ░     ing strategies to use with ALPHAQUOTE, one for a       
  47. ░     consistent layout and another for an inconsistent      
  48. ░     layout.                                                
  49. ░                                                            
  50. ░     For example, books and technical documents are         
  51. █     consistent.  Page after page is virtually the same     
  52. █     with an occasional chapter drop or piece of spot art.  
  53. ░     For these projects ALPHAQUOTE is quite straight-       
  54. ░     forward, answer the questions from the various menus   
  55. ░     as they are presented.  When finished press 'V' from   
  56. ░     the MAIN MENU to view the results.                     
  57. ░                                                            
  58. ░     Magazines are an example of an inconsistent layout.    
  59. ░     The first pages may be two columns and the second      
  60. ▒     three columns.  The typeface and point size may vary   
  61. ▒     and some pages may be more complex than others.        
  62. ░     The best approach to an inconsistent layout is to      
  63. ░     estimate each page separately.                         
  64. ░                                                            
  65. ░     ALPHAQUOTE allows input based on the number of         
  66. ░     characters or number of pages to describe the          
  67. ░     length of the document to be estimated.  For           
  68. █     an inconsistent layout, answer the Number of           
  69. █     Characters question with zero (0) and the Number       
  70. ░     of Pages with 1.  Answer all of the other questions    
  71. ░     appropriately.  Press 'V' from the MAIN MENU to see    
  72. ░     the results for page 1.  Select 'E' from the MAIN      
  73. ░     MENU.  Using the PGDN, PGUP and CURSOR keys,           
  74. ░     navigate to the items that change for page 2.          
  75. ░                                                            
  76. ░     For example, page 1 is a 2 column page, but            
  77. ░     page 2 is 3 columns.  Navigate to the columns          
  78. ░     question change the 2 to a 3 then press F2 for the     
  79. ▒     result.  ALPHAQUOTE will quickly recalculated using    
  80. ▒     the new information.  Go through the entire job        
  81. ░     looking for exceptions make just those changes         
  82. ░     then press f2 for immediate results. Magazines tend    
  83. ░     to have sections that are the same.  Lumping like      
  84. ░     sections together will speed the estimating process.

  86. █     Starting with version 3.0, ALPHAQUOTE will keep        
  87. ░     track of individual pages when estimating an           
  88. ░     inconsistent layout.  The Breakout By Pages feature    
  89. ░     will itemize each page and keep a running total.
